The History of Knowledge Conference – Uporto 2023 brings together specialists from the History of Knowledge, History of Science, Colonial Studies, Maritime History and Global History to show their ongoing research or consolidated results, having as central theme the “Circulation of knowledge – Epistemic, Social and Material dimensions”.
The conference is sponsored by the CITCEM (Transdisciplinary Research Centre “Culture, Space and Memory), based at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, and will take place in Porto, Portugal, on 22, 23 and 24 November 2023.
Global Flows of Knowledge
The conference is being organised in the framework of the CITCEM’s Global Exchanges research line. This research line presents the oceans and trans-oceanic explorations across time and place as a focal point for the study of globalisation as a long-term historical movement, focusing on its transnational socio-economic, cultural and ecological aspects and its elements of rupture and continuity. It considers the migration of political, religious and economic models (such as those integrated into colonisation systems) and the circulation of population, science, technology and Knowledge between and across oceans. The RL focus on the concept of trans-oceanic exchanges, aiming to illuminate the historical development of global sea economies connecting various oceans and cultures. Relying on the study of economic and other indicators, it will investigate mechanisms of globalisation facilitated by the centrality of the oceans from the 1st Global Age (1500-1800) onwards.
